Lego’s New Mario Kart Sets Delight Fans
Lego’s latest Mario Kart sets are proving to be an irresistible temptation for enthusiasts. In honor of MAR10 DAY, or “Mario Day,” the company has released the Standard Kart and Baby Peach & Grand Prix sets, which I had the pleasure of building. After spending several enjoyable hours assembling them, I find myself on the brink of wanting to host my own unofficial Lego Grand Prix.
Standard Kart: A Clever and Charming Build
The Standard Kart, a compact and cleverly designed set, is the perfect entry point for fans. It features a traditional kart equipped with a Mario glider, a mechanic Toad, and a small mechanic station. Notably, both the kart and the station contain interactive chips, enabling compatibility with other Super Mario sets. This clever inclusion encourages collectors to expand their collections, although it’s possible to enjoy the set without them. As with most Lego creations, the assembly instructions guide builders through a meticulous yet satisfying process, starting with the kart’s base and building it up step by step. While there aren’t many surprises, there are delightful elements, such as the shell-firing mechanism seen in most karts and the imaginative use of flame pieces to signify engine ignition. The addition of a tiny, charming banana piece adds to the fun, although the glider sail felt somewhat fragile during assembly, creating a slight sense of apprehension. Nevertheless, it ultimately enhances the kart’s visual appeal.
Baby Peach & Grand Prix Set: The Showstopper
Transitioning to the Baby Peach & Grand Prix Set, this flagship offering stands out with its vibrant designs and thematic elements that elevate the Mario Kart experience. This set includes three racers—Toad, Baby Peach, and Lemmy—along with their unique karts, roadways, traffic signals, Lakitu on his cloud, a vending cart, a winner’s podium, question blocks, and a yellow brick starting line. I found the individual karts particularly enjoyable to build, as each features distinct characteristics and components. The starting line, embellished with numerous stickers, also presented a fun challenge.
Unique Kart Designs and Engaging Assembly
The assembly guide begins with the karts, so I followed suit. Toad’s bike is a nimble and straightforward build, though I encountered some confusion regarding the front wheel attachment, which required precise placement of parts and specific pins. Once I grasped the instructions, Toad was ready to race. Lemmy’s kart offers a more satisfying experience, featuring new elements to create a spike cannon, resulting in a stylish pirate-themed design. Lemmy himself is equally charming, with colorful building pieces forming a playful mohawk.
A Standout Favorite: Baby Peach’s Wiggler Kart
However, my favorite build from the two sets has to be Baby Peach’s Wiggler Kart. This build is bursting with creativity. Using orange and yellow pieces, the kart comes together in an abstract form, slowly revealing its identity as you add details like eyes, feet, a button nose, and a flower, culminating in a recognizable Wiggler. Baby Peach’s adorable Lego figure further enhances this standout set.
A Future of Expansion Awaits
The addition of the starting line and various racer accessories makes this set ripe for expansion. After all, a true Mario Kart race requires more than just four racers. With beloved characters such as Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, and additional Toads available for collection, the potential for future builds is substantial. Interestingly, it’s apparent that Lego has designed this set to be highly collectible, and despite recognizing this strategy, I find myself eager for more. The Mario Kart sets have made a delightful addition to the Lego lineup, promising a bright future both in personal collections and in the broader community. Well done, Lego, you have created a winning product. Happy MAR10 Day to all who celebrate!
